FRP Fibre reinforced plastic (Fibre reinforced polymers)
FRPs are composite materials made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibres. The fibers more commonly used in the construction sectors are carbon and aramid. This technology coming from the aeronautical sector was introduced in construction some years ago. Orion Constructive Applications has more than 10 years experience in applying these techniques.
Carbon fibre plates constitute a very light and quick reinforcing system, which is commonly used in floors and beams reinforcement. These plates considerably increase the safety requirements and the bearing capacity.
Carbon fibre sheets or bands are very often used in pillar reinforcement, in order to dress supporting pillars subjected to compressive stress. To get shear reinforcement in beams and main beams, you can use u shaped sheets or bands over the beam. It is also possible to use sheets and bands for bending reinforcement in beams, but it is better to use plates, considering the setting up is much easier in that way.
For structures made of stone or brick, like vaults, arches or masonry, it is better to use aramid fibre, due to its lower resilient module. It means this material changes less its form under stress than carbon fibre. Therefore, the reinforcement performance is more similar to the original material. Nowadays, it is commonly used as impact protector.
